Check in to the Maryland Mobileers Monday Night Roundtable Net every Monday evening at 7:30 PM on the W3CU repeater. The net is open to all licensed amateur radio operators, and club membership is not required. Participants may share announcements, ask questions, discuss amateur radio, or bring another friendly topic for the group.

The Roundtable is also available through EchoLink Node 90911, KA2JAI-R. New and experienced operators are always welcome.

How to Check In

Tune your radio to 146.805 MHz with a negative 600 kHz offset and a 107.2 Hz PL tone.
Listen for Net Control to request check-ins.
Press the push-to-talk button and pause briefly.
State your call sign, first name, location, and whether you have traffic.
Release the button and wait for Net Control to acknowledge you.

Any Maryland Mobileers member may serve as Net Control when the scheduled operator is unavailable. The script below helps Net Control maintain a well-organized, welcoming, and consistent Roundtable.

Before the Net

Review club announcements
Open the club calendar
Prepare paper or a check-in log
Verify the repeater is clear
Confirm EchoLink is available
Test microphone audio
Have the script and clock visible
Begin at approximately 7:30 PM

During the Net

Write down call signs clearly
Give mobile stations priority
Allow time for EchoLink delays
Identify every 10 minutes
Pause for emergency traffic
Welcome new operators
Repeat unclear call signs
Ask for late check-ins
Keep conversations moving

📄Net Control Guidelines

Keep the net moving.
Keep comments between stations brief.
Remember stations that have announcements.
Be flexible.
Identify with your station call sign at least every 10 minutes.
State: “This is [Your Call Sign], Net Control Station for the Maryland Mobileers Amateur Radio Club Roundtable.”
Leave short pauses between transmissions for urgent or emergency traffic.
Speak clearly and allow extra time for newer operators and EchoLink users.

1. 📡Opening the Net

Good evening.

This is [Your Call Sign], Net Control Station for the Maryland Mobileers Amateur Radio Club Roundtable.

This net meets every Monday evening at 7:30 PM local time on the Maryland Mobileers W3CU repeater in Millersville, Maryland. The repeater operates on 146.805 MHz output and 146.205 MHz input, with a PL tone of 107.2 Hz.

EchoLink is also available through Node 90911, KA2JAI-R.

This net is open to all licensed amateur radio operators and is not limited to members of the Maryland Mobileers Amateur Radio Club.

This net operates in a roundtable format. All transmissions are at the direction of Net Control. Participants are welcome to bring a topic for discussion, and it does not have to be amateur-radio related.

Before beginning regular check-ins, is there any emergency, priority, or time-sensitive traffic?

2. 📢 Announcements

Net Control:

Before we begin check-ins, are there any stations with announcements for the good of amateur radio or the Maryland Mobileers Amateur Radio Club?

(Pause and acknowledge any stations.)

After announcements have been handled:

Thank you. We appreciate everyone sharing information that may be of interest to our members and guests.

Net Control Notes

Club announcements should be handled first.
Allow brief announcements only.
If an announcement may require discussion, note it for Round One or Round Two.
Emergency or priority traffic always takes precedence.

3. 🚗Mobile and Short-Time Check-Ins

Net Control:

We will now take check-ins from any mobile stations or stations with limited operating time.

(Pause 2–3 seconds.)

Mobile or short-time stations, please come now with your call sign, first name, location, and whether you have traffic.

After all stations respond:

Thank you to all of our mobile stations.

If you expect to leave the repeater coverage area before the net concludes, please let Net Control know. You will be given an opportunity to make your comments before regular Round One begins.

Net Control Notes

Mobile stations always receive priority.
Allow short-time stations to give comments early if requested.
Record each station on the check-in list.
Confirm call signs if necessary.

4. 🌐 EchoLink Check-Ins

We will now take check-ins from any stations joining us through EchoLink.

Pause a few seconds before speaking again.

Then say:

Any EchoLink stations wishing to check in, please come now with your call sign, first name, location, and whether you have traffic.

After the responses:

Welcome to all of our EchoLink participants. If you lose your connection, simply reconnect and check back in when prompted for late or missed stations.

Then finish with:

Are there any additional EchoLink stations wishing to check in before we continue?

Pause again.

Net Control Tips

Speak slightly slower for EchoLink users.
Pause 2–3 seconds after asking for check-ins to allow for internet latency.
Repeat difficult call signs if needed.
Record EchoLink stations with the regular check-in list.
If an EchoLink station disconnects, welcome them back during late check-ins.

5. 📻 General Check-Ins

Net Control:

We will now begin our general check-in portion of the net. Please give your FCC call sign, first name, location, and whether you have any traffic or comments for the net.

We will take check-ins by call sign suffix in the following order:

Alpha – Golf
Hotel – November
Oscar – Tango
Uniform – Zulu

(Pause after each group and acknowledge stations.)

After completing all four groups:

Are there any late, missed, or relayed stations anywhere in the alphabet?

(Pause.)

If none:

Hearing none, we'll proceed to our first round of comments.

Net Control Notes

Record stations in the order received.
Verify any call signs that are unclear.
Welcome first-time check-ins.
Pause several seconds after each call for stations with slower response times.
Give your FCC call sign at least every 10 minutes.

6. 💬 Round One Discussion

Net Control:

We will now begin Round One. Mobile stations and short-time stations will be called first, followed by all other stations in the order they checked in.

Invite each station individually:

[Call Sign], please go ahead.

Participants may:

Share announcements
Ask questions
Discuss amateur radio topics
Introduce a new discussion topic
Comment on previous discussions

After each station:

Thank the operator.
Pause briefly for emergency or priority traffic.
Move to the next station.

When all stations have spoken:

That concludes Round One.

Are there any late or missed stations wishing to check in before we begin Round Two?

(Pause.)

Keep the discussion moving.
Encourage participation from newer operators.
Avoid allowing one station to dominate the conversation.
Keep discussions friendly and respectful.

7. 🔄 Round Two Discussion

Net Control:

We will now begin Round Two.

Mobile stations will again be offered the opportunity to comment first, followed by the remaining stations in check-in order.

This round may be used for:

Follow-up comments
Responses to previous discussions
New questions
Additional announcements
Final comments before closing

Toward the end of the round ask:

Are there any final announcements, questions, comments, or late check-ins before we close tonight's net?

(Pause.)

If announcements were made earlier:

Encourage shorter comments to allow everyone time to participate.
Keep an eye on the time.
Identify with your call sign every 10 minutes if necessary.
Make sure every checked-in station has had an opportunity to speak.

What should I do if I arrive late?

How long does the Roundtable usually last?

Most Monday Night Roundtables last about one hour depending on participation.
