❤️ Why Volunteer?

Beginning in 2026, the Maryland Mobileers Amateur Radio Club is proud to provide communications support for a variety of Public Service Events throughout Anne Arundel County. Our volunteers help race directors, event staff, and emergency personnel by providing dependable communications that contribute to the safety and success of each event.

We welcome all licensed amateur radio operators in good standing—whether you're a new ham or an experienced operator—to volunteer your time and skills. Public Service Events are an excellent opportunity to gain operating experience, serve your community, and enjoy the fellowship of working alongside other amateur radio operators.

FAQ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

❓ Do I need expensive equipment to volunteer?

No. A basic handheld (HT) or mobile 2-meter amateur radio is sufficient for most assignments. Some events may recommend additional equipment, but new volunteers are encouraged to participate with the equipment they already have.

❓ Will I work alone?

Not usually. Many assignments place volunteers near another operator, aid station staff, or event personnel. Net Control is also available throughout the event to provide support and assistance.

❓ Can family members come with me?

Family members are welcome to accompany volunteers at many events, provided they do not interfere with event operations. Please check with the Event Coordinator for any event-specific guidelines.

❓ Are Public Service Events good emergency communications training?

Yes. Public Service Events provide valuable real-world experience using directed nets, tactical communications, message handling, and operating under conditions similar to emergency deployments.

❓ What if I have never participated in a directed net?

No problem! Experienced operators and Net Control will guide you through the process. Public Service Events are an excellent opportunity to become comfortable operating on directed nets.

❓ What should I wear?

Dress for the weather and wear comfortable clothing and walking shoes. A reflective safety vest is recommended, and club apparel is encouraged if you have it.

❓ How will I know my assignment?

Assignments are typically sent by email before the event or provided during the volunteer briefing. Information will include your location, reporting time, operating frequency, and any special instructions.

❓ Will food or water be provided?

Some events provide refreshments for volunteers, while others do not. Volunteers should plan to bring their own water, snacks, and any personal items they may need during their assignment.

❓ Can I volunteer if I'm also participating in the event?

Generally, volunteers should not participate as competitors while serving in a communications role. If you plan to both participate and volunteer, contact the Event Coordinator to discuss available opportunities.

❓ Why does amateur radio support these events?

Amateur radio provides reliable communications when cellular service is overloaded, unavailable, or when event organizers need dependable coordination across large areas. Our volunteers help improve participant safety and support the successful operation of community events.
